Are Americans ditching cities in fiscally responsible states?

July 28, 2015

A Bloomberg magazine article last week, titled “These are the Top 20 Cities Americans Are Ditching,” identified 20 different cities around the country with the highest outmigration rates among the 100 largest cities in the US.

Coincidentally, or not, and most likely not, Truth in Accounting’s calculations show that these 20 cities are in states with much higher “Taxpayer Burdens” than cities in other states in the nation.

Of the 20 cities identified by Bloomberg with highest outmigration (see list below), there were three states that had multiple cities that made the list. New York had two cities, while Connecticut and Ohio each had three cities that made the cut.

Looking across the 20 cities, they are overwhelmingly concentrated in states with state governments in relatively poor financial condition.  The weighted-average TIA “Taxpayer Burden” for the states where these 20 cities are located came to roughly $21,200 in 2014, nearly ten times as high as the average for the other states in the union.
