We have updated the “Votes for Libertarian Electors” data we include in State Data Lab.
After a big increase in 2012, growth in vote totals accelerated in 2016. For the 45 states without changes in ballot access, votes climbed above 4 million, over three times as many votes as in 2012.
Gains were widespread throughout the states. We will be looking closer at the characteristics of states that are relatively “libertarian,” and the states where growth is especially strong.
