Bad news from Illinois comptroller. Better late than never?

March 23, 2018

The Illinois comptroller’s office on Thursday released the annual financial report for fiscal year 2017.

Or did it?

The date on the letter of transmittal, which is addressed to “The Citizens of the State of Illinois,” “Honorable Bruce Rauner, Governor” and “Honorable Members of the General Assembly,” from Comptroller Susana Mendoza, is March 15, 2018.

Putting the dismal results aside, one has to question: why the discrepancy? Why does Illinois write us a transmittal letter dated March 15, a week before we get this report?

Who gets this stuff first?

Regardless of whether it’s March 15 or March 22, one of things that makes the report dismal is how late it was issued.

We finally found out the financial condition of our state for a fiscal year that ended more than 265 days ago.

Here’s what it was doing back then. What’s it doing now? Good luck finding out.
